Every wonder what the American football looked like in 1883 compared to other kinds of footballs?
This comes from the Wright & Ditson Foot-Ball Guide 1883 that we quoted yesterday:
This is the earliest football advertisement I’m aware of (though, naturally, I haven’t been through every single newspaper and magazine). Notice that the American ball looked a lot like the association (i.e. soccer) ball. Over time, the ball would change to more closely resemble the rugby ball.
