It’s Heart Attack Time!
I think that coaching this team is going to take years off of my life.
Our defense is pathetic. The “rubber band” theory simply doesn’t work. We couldn’t stop the pass today, and we couldn’t stop the run today. I found myself completely confused, uncertain how to best set up the defense, and reacting to the last successful Steeler play rather than trying to predict what was coming next.
Sipe threw for over 300 yards, but it was not quite enough. He continued to dump the ball off to the running back instead of hitting the intended receiver, and was sacked on several occasions. I’d say that this was the most pathetic 300 yard passing performance I’ve seen.
Mike Pruitt couldn’t make anything happen on the ground, and Greg Pruitt was even worse.
I’m sorry to say this, but it’s looking like this project will not result in a playoff appearance.
Game Stats
We simply couldn’t run today. We couldn’t run, we couldn’t hold on to the football, and we couldn’t pass.
Sipe was under pressure all game long. Pittsburgh never stopped blitzing. We’re going to see those blitzing linebackers in our dreams all week long.
Pittsburgh was decimated by penalties, and yet we couldn’t capitalize.
And, as I’ve said before, when the running game doesn’t work, the passing game just doesn’t go right. This was the most shallow 300 yard passing performance I’ve ever seen.
I’m surprised that Franco Harris only averaged 3 yards per carry. It seemed like every other down that he was gaining 8 to 10.
Both Smith and Swann were huge problems for us in the air. If we keyed one player, Bradshaw would simply throw to the other man. Neither man-to-man nor zone defense worked for us. As I’ve said, this defense really needs some work.
Kardiac Kids indeed.
Other Highlights
The Redskins lost their first game, managing to lose at home to New Orleans, 30-26. Washington scored with 53 seconds left after a Theismann touchdown pass to Harmon, but couldn’t recover the onside kickoff.
The Philadelphia Eagles, meanwhile, improved to 7-0. That NFC East division is clearly the strongest in the NFL:
