Hawaii's Wonder Teams
If you read about the history of Hawaii football, you’ll see the famous teams of 1924 and 1925 mentioned time and time again.
Hawaii went on a 20 game winning streak in those years, managing to accumulate two undefeated seasons. And the feat is pretty impressive — until you look at the teams they played, that is.
Here is Hawaii’s 1924 schedule:
Similarly, here is the team’s 1925 schedule:
First of all, you’ll notice that Hawaii played almost exclusively local military, high school, and amateur teams. It’s not necessarily all that impressive to put up 86 points against the Hawaii National Guard or 74 against the Healani Athletic Club.
Hawaii also only played a single road game in those two years. That is understandable, of course, since travel to and away from Hawaii was very difficult in those days. The first experimental flight from the west coast to Hawaii didn’t happen until late August 1925 — and we were several years away from anything like a consistent commercial flight.
In other words — the Deans had to take an ocean voyage to reach the Memorial Coliseum in time for that November 26 road game:
Of course, Occidental turned out to not be much of a match for Hawaii:
The question, of course, is whether Hawaii was actually a great team in those years or not. I suppose we’ll never know for sure.
